The string of horrible furry media coverage in the early 2000s didn't exist in a vacuum.
It was part of a massive post-9/11 push for jingoism and "normalcy" on TV. So everybody "different" or "marginal" would be portrayed as a villain or be made the target of mockery.
Hence furry marginalization.
It always felt weird to me that anything "Non-mainstream" I liked was being attacked, somehow...
And now, it makes a whole lot of sense.
Shame that we're seeing jingoism making a new-age resurgence, unfortunately. :\
We were already xenophobic/homophobic/racist, and consumerist long before 9/11. And Christian/conservative. Bush leading the war/recovery made it obvious. TV was full of sex abuse crime drama while print had yellow journalism. Put it in a blender with the animation age ghetto, you get reactionaries.
There's a reason I essentially vanished from sight in about 2002.
I'm not doing that again, but I was NOT I'm a good place.
To quote RATM, fuck you. I won't do what you tell me.
