I used straw the last couple of years and had mould and vine weevil. This year, one bed thickly mulched, the other planted through black porous fleece. Plants and crop much improved.

Our old bed that we had straw on quite thickly was mouldy, we hadn't seen that in the previous three years, the mould affected some of the stalks so that fruit didn't ripen well, we're definitely not using it again.
