The monologuing and grandstanding is specifically the point. They need to feel superior to everyone else. They need to feel like the shining heroes of their own story, so they made up a story and forced a conflict. If they don't do the monologue, then it was all for nothing.

This is exactly what it feels like hearing them speak: they constantly frame themselves as the main characters of their own story. Fighting imaginary villains, and hurting real people in the process.
