As an engineer moving into a management role, you end up losing direct involvement in all the details. Much more time in meetings & docs. I'm enjoying the impact I have, but I find myself downstream of things more often. Which is how we launched kawaii mode and I wasn't even here to uwu about it

So, you are no longer the bug-putter-inner or the bug-fixer-upper? Who do we complain to, now?

Yeah I’m feeling that pretty hard myself this year. It’s been an interesting transition. I like it I think, but it’s definitely a shift in perspective, involvement, etc.

Same here (albeit in a smaaaaller startup) and I struggle a lot with this. Sometimes I'm just "fuck this, I want to code!" but then we ship that new feature we planned together and I mostly contributed to just by reviewing/givinig advice and it's soo cool! (I think you still do a lot of coding?)

Did they promote you to keep you from putting bugs in the code? Maybe that’s what I need to do more of at work…

My... back button... ☹️... it's doing it again. Or rather NOT doing it again. I think it happens when you post twice on someone else's original post. & still, this app, 9.6/10. Keep up the good work.

Look on the bright side. You didn’t end up in some ket induced fugue, and promised to pay $44bn for a dying social media company. Then sobered up and really regretted it.

There is a growing trend of people getting a taste of the management world and moving back to the individual contributor side of things. So you always have the option of moving back into more hands-on roles in the future if you really wanted. You would be far from the only one.

I agree. I used to run engineering in a pharma plant. As I moved up I spent less and less time playing with machinery and projects Best thing I ever did professionally was to quit and be an independent machinery sales reps which evolved into a consulting biz. No employees

At least you're aware of the change in dynamics and have direct experience actually doing everything you're now managing. That should be a basic requirement for any management role. Being managed by someone with zero hands on knowledge of the work they're managing and no desire to learn is 🤬

Engineering to management is neat because you learning to be a more effective engineer, but via a different path from other engineering skills. It's like stepping out of Plato's cave. Rather than being blindsided by decisions from other parts of the company, you are immersed in the context.

As a retired scientist, I can safely say that management is a radically different type of job than the one you came from. Many people in technical jobs are not suited for the changing demands and only discover this fact after they have taken on the new role. Others thrive. Good luck!

Just don't lose your mojo. The number of times I've had to put out fires because unpracticed engineers-become-managers misinterpreted the results is too damn high. They tried putting me in a PM role and made me discover just how much I hate babysitting adults.
