From 2019 to 2022 the American Indian / Alaska Native population in US Census data increased by 52%, or 2.9 million. 62% of the increase was in Hispanic AIANs, who now are 37% of the AIAN #population.

I think it comes from changing the "race" value to American Indian if Hispanics write in, e.g., "Aztec" on the Hispanic question even if they didn't say AmInd for race. (Aztec is now the largest AmInd group: 387k). Groups always like to bigger, but are AmInd demography advocates happy with this?
