They're walking him through the whole extremely complex process, and he's nodding along as if he's following along. At some point he realizes he can't just ask "hey, what does this symbol mean?" because he spent too long acting like he understood them.

So, he takes a wild guess, points to one symbol on one out of a million lines, and asks them "what happens if this breaks?" Cue frantic flips through the schematics until they conclude: oh god, you're right, if that valve broke we'd get a criticality incident. You're a genius.
