Yeah - the issue isn't that it's going to damage the stones. There's victorian carved graffiti on a lot of them anyway. It's that it's likely to damage people's ability to experience the site.

I was in Vienna when there was a rash of these art attacks and in every museum they were making you check backpacks and I couldn't help but side-eye every hippy looking youth standing kinda close to the art and that's not a great way to go through a museum.
