the reason I never buy that religious belief is especially problematic or epistemically defective is because mythologies proliferate with or without a religious veneer and are just as resistant history myths are extremely powerful and they're often cloaked in the language of scientific authority

a fun example is the sheer amount of references that people make to the library of Alexandria and the implied loss of culture and civilization it represents it's an entirely constructed myth with no relation to history, but it's emotionally powerful for many people
