I've always considered Bush v Kerry to be a bit of an outlier. Bush only got 0.8% over him, but he was also an incumbent. So that year always gets forgotten by me. 😅 But still, the GOP hasn't been able to replicate pre-1988 numbers ever since. Trump was down 3m in 2016, and almost 8m in 2020.
