I would like to think, if they are as intelligent or near so as us, they will see which specific humans to blame :/ because many of us don’t want them any harm

There are stories of things like an elephant deliberately coming for a human (cause unknown, but quite plausible one that hurt them or their family member previously) and, well, doing them up elephant-style before retreating into the forest.

A few years back an Indian woman was killed by an elephant, and the same elephant then showed up to her funeral to attack her corpse. Nobody else was harmed. On the other side of things, Laurence Anthony's grave is visited yearly by the elephant herds he befriended and protected.
