Speaking as someone who lives in the most bike-friendly city in the US (SUCK IT PORTLAND), once you get bike lanes and such in place, the amount of car/bike animosity goes WAY down. Much friendlier when everyone has space. That said, not all cities are good for bikes. Weather, terrain, etc..
