Part of the reasoning for most Pratchet fans is he was refreshingly wise and had a strong leftist lean. He had the ability to communicate the problems of the world in a manner that wouldn't offend anyone.  I'm honestly surprised he didn't slip a character into the Discworld universe who did so.

pterry was a genius -- he understood people, *deeply and thoroughly*, and he could *write* that, in ways that were humourous and meaningful. I miss him.
