You could also try buying a set of basic white ceramic flatware and spend a bit more on stuff for the table that's really noticeable; s&p shakers, a gravy boat, napkin rings, pitchers, etc. Depends on how fancy you wanna go, but this can be a "dress in basics, splurge on accessories" kind of deal.

Estate sales are good for this too. Similar randomness, but we bought most of our daily use dishes for almost nothing more than once this way.
