Plastic is inescapable. Cars and electronics are made from it. Nearly everything we buy is packaged in it, and it’s even in our clothes. How did we end up using so much of it?

The direct answer to your question is, because plastics (note the spelling) have fantastic properties which sometimes are not achievable with other materials.
