But I suppose that, if one considers other forms of peer evaluation as well (as our special issue intends to do), the story is much more complex and longer, with cross-disciplinary influences not only from the sciences to the humanities, but also the other way around.

Okay, I see. Well yes, it is definitely an interesting question what sort of a variety of peer review practices there has been throughout the history, and what sort of cross-pollination has been going on. My feeling is that the culture was much more colloquial back in the day (say, before the 50s).
