Not going to fully rehash this for the 100th time, but yes, civil disobedience by def is unlawful. Universities and many other institutions have since the 60s permitted a certain level of civil disobedience so as to avoid students being killed by cops and seeming draconian. This spring was a shift.

OK. I took your original skeet ("were not going to stick") to be a comment about the dubious *legal* merit of the charges. There are certainly lots of other grounds to criticize the approach Columbia took here.

Many DAs told universities in advance (for example here in Philly) that they would not prosecute simple trespass. The unis choose to work with police as if the charges could be prosecuted anyway b/c as others have noted they wanted to punish and scare students w/ the process.
