by "second attempt" of course I mean a second effort to get more than a few hours into the game. I fell off again when I got to the gas station and A) realized that crafting materials weren't shared across "settlements" and then B) remembered how much of the game was a very bad basebuilding sim

I definitely did not want to deal with the base building bullshit. I played survival difficulty, but use mods to fix some of the undesirable stuff. In particular I turned off raids and never bothered to build any any bases. I also set the carry weight of all of that crafting crap to zero
