And it circles back to the actor's director thing, doesn't it? Neeson could've nailed a tragic hero (I find myself suddenly thinking about Darkman), but he needed a director who would sit down and talk to him about the character. Beatty as Qui Gon would've been great.

Connery could've done it, yes, but he'd also need a supportive director: one could imagine him misunderstanding the character and trying to play it like Ramirez in Highlander. (Which is a great performance--for Highlander, not Phantom Menace.)
