As a retired practitioner, I have trouble calling most of these academics "lawyers". Many of them have scarcely practiced, or practiced at a level so abstracted (e.g. drafting appellate briefs) from the law as it's fought in the trenches that they'd get filleted fighting a traffic ticket.

I had professors at UNC who had clerked (a couple at SCOTUS, even) and/or been at a white shoe firm for a few years before getting a professorship who I'm pretty sure never actually practiced law in front of the bench. (In fairness, I had some professors who HAD been actual lawyers.)
