I feel like George Lucas pats himself on the back too much about this. He was clearly mostly inspired by the evil empire vs rebels dynamic from Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. (Not saying there was no Vietnam War parallels. But it was clearly more just Flash Gordon.)

That and also other things like WWII air force documentaries like "The Memphis Belle" and of course Kurosawa movies.
