How we account for the variety of motives among Reconstruction’s framers, and esp. how we understand the relationship/tensions/balance between, on the one hand, the imperative to “punish treason” and “reward loyalty,” and on the other, the pursuit of an abolitionist and egalitarian agenda? 🗃️
