Today I learned: both Orcas Island and Guemes Island are named for this mellifluously-christened gentleman Juan Vicente de Güemes Pacheco de Padilla y Horcasitas Güemes -> Guemes (gweemus) Horcasitas -> Orcas - why Orcas is pronounced with the voiceless alveolar sibilant /s/ rather than /z/
