but seriously “gang banger” is not really used where i’m from. it’s some 90s shit cus gangs were the thing back then. eventually it took a new, sexual meaning. that’s what comes to mind when i hear it

I don't remember it being a term where I grew up (southern Ontario in the 80s and 90s) either, but I've heard it enough in American contexts that it holds that meaning for me. Even in the sexual meaning, I hear it now in consensual contexts but I recall early usage being used to describe group rape.
