The Multiverse seemed really cool when I was young, but by the time I hit puberty it was mostly took up page space explaining how, say, Infinity, Inc met the Outsiders.

I understood the impulse to simply the milieu, especially as confusion was setting in with the general public (as per the Earth 2 Superman/Lois marriage that got real world, slightly puzzled, coverage). But, like you said, not having a firm plan afterwards hindered the company's efforts.
