I get it. We want to be *in* on the conversation. It’s like trying to jump in on double dutch. Those ropes are moving FAST. And, I think, it’s easier to reply “ugh, that HEADLINE is awful” than to engage the gnarly problem itself. AND you’re right, headlines often are awful.

On the aside, when if was young and anxious (still can get anxious, just not young now) but wanted to be part of the real-life conversation in front of me double dutch was exactly what my mental image of it was

I'm much better about it than I ised to be, but even (especially?) people who decry the poor media literacy of others are not drilling down to content of article let alone primary source referenced therein. They start with the anxiety then deflect for comfort.
