US going full monarchy is shocking a lot of people but I think a lot of folk ahistorically think the Roman Empire just suddenly decided to go orgy mode and fell in a week or something. It was way more of a slow erosion from within

Also, the Republican offices and "structure" continued to exist LONG into the Imperial period. You still had Quaestors and Consuls and Praetors etc. all while the entirety of actual governing authority was vested in the Emperor and his (thoroughly monarchical) court.
