John Carpenter's Dark Star premiered FIFTY years ago today. It was the start of a career for John Carpenter, but also for Dan O'Bannon, who would go on to work on Jodorowsky's unproduced Dune before co-creating Alien.

When I saw Dark Star I just assumed it was a satire inspired by Alien. I was very surprised to learn it was made first!

This movie was made for something like $3.58. What's shocking is that, the story is good. The fact that there are no female roles, and that the men are all anti-heroes, are key to the story. And the story is more of an inflated irony, but it all works out. It stuck in my mind. ("Benson, Arizona...")
