42 years ago today, on June 25 1982, John Carpenter's The Thing and Ridley Scott's Blade Runner were both released in cinemas.
An important day for sci-fi.
And yet, these future classics were no great successes, and received a polarized reception at best.
Both poster art by Drew Struzan:
This is the way with all classics. Both Star Wars and Terminator got luke warm receptions and played to near empty theatres on their opening weekend. Terminator especially became a slow burn cult hit because of VHS.
Bladerunner was my first R rated movie. I was still in junior high and my brother bought the tickets while I held back and pretended I was there to see ET. I can’t say I understood the movie but I’ll always be grateful to have a cool brother.
I especially like, how different these two posters are, even though they’re from the same person. Today’s MondoRetroDesigners almost always transform several cult movies in their very distinct style.
When originally released, the studio had forced a voice over throughout the film, and overbearing solo saxophone. The directors cut we love so much now was not what people originally saw. You could still see the brilliance, but it was compromised.
