KAZAKH OPPOSITION JOURNALIST SHOT IN KYIV: Since the 2000s, Aidos Sadykov has been known for his sharp criticism of the Kazakh authorities, my colleague Oleh Tymoshenko reports. Threatened by the authorities, Sadykov moved to Ukraine along with his wife in 2014.

MILLIONS OF FAMILY MEMBERS TORN BY WAR: 74 percent of Ukrainians have been separated from close family members as a result of the invasion, The Economist reports. Under martial law, men of fighting age are not permitted to leave the country (with some exceptions).
