"Rule of law" is there to protect me from you and you from me. It's the membrane that allows peaceful osmosis of disputes so that wild-west vigilantism is unnecessary. Are we losing it now? And are Trump and his cronies to blame? (That last question is rhetorical.)
The most horrifying description of politics I've heard was from Carl Schmitt. He said that a true Nazi does not need hate or moral reasons for annihilating the enemy. A true Nazi destroys the enemy simply because they are the enemy.
