A young male American Redstart, for "Lies" in the 2019 Month of Love prompt list. For their first year, these little guys look a lot like females but for a few scattered black feathers, seen here on the head. He's bent to his right to preen his feathers, showing his fanned tail. (1/2) ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿชถ๐Ÿก

The question is, why delay plumage maturation? Most new world warblers get adult-like plumage quickly, even in males. Hypotheses range from decreasing aggression from older males to sneaking copulation with females early, but also, this species is highly territorial on winter grounds & fights (2/3)
