For the first half of the 90s, I was living in an area with a large (pro and fan) comics community. Rumors got around. (On Usenet too.) I think I was shocked earlier this week, but not surprised, if that makes sense?

Yes. My brother and I used to walk downtown to buy his comics. We didn't hang around other fans or go to conventions. I don't care to hear about author biographies because it's always post hoc criticism. "Oh that explains why he wrote X" is never useful in understanding the work
