I was very excited to see if any Robin McKinley books made the list :) Spindle’s End is a great book.

You NAILED it on why fairy tales are so special, and I definitely wanna try out these reccs >w> This all made me wonder, have you ever watched Jim Henson's The Storyteller series? It's genuinely some of my favorite fairy tale retellings, with plenty of cute and/or creepy puppets to go along with it

Thanks! If the SFWA ever votes on the “greatest” fantasy books, I think one of the subcategories should be “revisionist fantasy/‘twice-told tales’,” so it was a treat to see one of my favorite current author’s take on this area.

I just finished reading _Rooted_ from this recommendation -- this probably would not have hit my radar otherwise. It was soooo very good! Thank you so much!

Lovely interview Ursula. The part about magic being just the way it is reminded me of that Grant Morrison bit and lead me to one of those “obvious click” moments: “Oh, yeah, duh, hero comics are as fairytale as they come.” And I love The 500 Kingdoms series. It’s so fun, I wish there were more.

Spindle’s End was a really formative book for me as a kid! It got very tattered and creased over time. Also, “That’s a lot of what being a writer is. Well, being a writer for adults. When I was writing for kids, people stopped me all the time” really got me.

Welp, your recommendation finally got me over the hump to try Uprooted AND I read the Goblin Market poem so you got me twice. I hope you’re happy.

Bridges of Birds is my "only one book on a desert island" book because I never get tired of rereading it. And I cry every single time.
