Folks who live in and around Chilean and Argentinian forests explain that in the heavily forested areas favored by the Red-spotted Toad, it is often too dark, even in daylight, to see the Toad's distinctive red spots. Hence a Red-spotted Toad that lives in the forest is a Forest Toad.
