Another way of thinking about this: in the last 50 years, Democrats have held the Presidency for 24 years; Republicans for 26 years. During that time, Republicans have appointed 11 Supreme Court Justices. Democrats have appointed 5.

Another fun thing to think about: 3 of those 5 Democratic appointees were made possible by Republican appointees strategically timing their retirements so that Democratic Presidents could choose their replacements (Blackmun->Breyer, Souter->Sotomayor, Stevens->Kagan).
