Clarence Thomas staying in to vote on his wife's case in Citizens United was a large piece that built to the current political landscape. Garland's appointment being blocked was another issue. On that, RBG's replacement may have also been blocked depending on timing.

And, really, a lot of this goes back to never holding Nixon or Reagan legally responsible for their crimes while in office and allowing Ford and Bush to live comfortably after granting those pardons.
