Totally agree, but there's also a culture of professional trouble-shooters and consultants who kick open the doors of a business, demand lay-offs, get short-term drops in costs, use it as evidence of "success" to get their next role, then ride off into the night before the cuts destroy profitability

Ah "consulting". The most useless "trade" in society. Funny going through my grandma's stuff I found an option article she'd kept from the early 90s warning against the consulting industry. It wasn't wrong.

McKinsey is definitely the most popular of them with that whole video of them training people to do just that and the people start singing "Hit the Road Jack" to break the news about people losing their jobs to show how they treat it.
