Artist Tanya Nixon-Silberg asked 14 mothers of color what phrases they heard growing up and what they say to their children now. The result is a textile project that explores what it means to decolonize parenting.
"Why did you fall? You're gonna scar your knees and you cannot wear skirts?" Yikes. I can't imagine being so afraid of everyday life. If it's any consolation, I've never been like "Nah, I can't date that chick. Her knees are too scarred." That's such a particular thing to be worried about.
