I heard a fascinating podcast episode a few years ago about how the interwar explosion in whodunnit fiction served a way to process death in a more manageable fashion.

Death had become an unavoidably present fact of life, but in the whodunnit everything is genteel (unlike mechanised warfare), and everything has an understandable explanation and motivation, and it all gets neatly resolved at the end.
