Last thing I will say about Diner is, he comes across as someone who will be happy accompanying you to the meeting where you get bad news about something you don't want to happen, because Rachel Reeves said the better alternative is slightly too expensive.

Reform candidate Mark Cole sought to draw common ground with other candidates, but got heckled a number of times, particularly on the "stop the boats" line. Biggest applause was split between Diner and Canessa. No question from the moderator on Gaza was very disappointing.

Harwich and North Essex hustings at University of Essex were a mixed bag. Bernard Jenkins didn't bother turning up (no reason given). There were fundamental contradictions from Green candidate Andrew Canessa who claims to be scared of Reform UK, but also wants proportional representation.

Labour should be offering towns like this something serious like Boris did in the North.

You don’t seem to be able to empathise with people who have suffered decades of sharp decline. You’re narrowly focusing on health when the issue is both parties have failed on issues like immigration and jobs, which the Reform is seizing upon to great effect.

What good is seeing a GP when there’s little work in your town, particularly outside the sparse domestic tourism season? Much of the country have very different problems to towns like Clacton. This is why I think it could go to Reform.

it's about sending a message, just like Brexit. the two major parties have failed so many people, i bet they can't imagine things getting better under either of them. all these media elites latching onto the comment Farage made about Clacton, people probably see that as honesty more than a slight.

UK seems to have good attitudes to the renewables. Most people just don't want to pay for investment through their energy bills. A windfall tax on energy companies to build publicly owned wind farms would be hugely popular. Cars do bring out the sovereign citizen conspiracy types, though.

I think that's a really unfair characterisation. I think Colchester and Clacton probably had an element of white flight from London. But a lot of them are just working class folk priced out of London reminiscing on the days of the post-war consensus, when you could just see a doctor and get a job.
