I came to this conclusion in November of 2016 and never looked back, I'd suggest a lot of you do the same, nothing is "predictable" about American politics at the moment.

LA CEREMONIE: Earns its reputation as possibly Chabrol’s best film; a diamond-cut rumination on class resentment mingling with psychosis until it’s unclear which one begat the other. Huppert’s performance feels truly dangerous.

I will say the action looks a bit cleaner in this one, the biggest reason I don’t like the first one is that it’s cut to shreds

Genuine question: does THE BEAR do flashback/single character episodes in order to not have the whole cast appear in all of them so they can afford all the music clearance? (This isn’t a criticism btw those episodes are terrific

THE BEAR S3 is a messy rumination on failure and the bone-deep terror that following your calling with the people you love might not be enough when your brilliance is inseparable from your insecurities. The rising action of Season 2 crashing into a wall. I loved it.

There’s a close-up of Bernthal’s face in the “Fishes” episode where you see all the years of hurt and failure in his eyes and you know he’s doomed and it made me just start sobbing.

I haven't mentioned this over here but I'm finally watching THE BEAR in its entirety and I find it unbelievably moving in ways that are incredibly personal to me. Don't even get me started on the music.

BURNING PARADISE: Really feels like a fusion of Lam and Tsui's sensibilities; lightning-fast wuxia mayhem but given a serrated, punishingly violent political edge that takes China's conflict between the holy and the secular to almost phantasmagoric heights.

THE BRIDE WORE BLACK: Operates in a weird zone between paying homage and parodying Hitchock, gives it a strange, giddy energy that Truffaut takes great advantage of. Also its hilarious that Tarantino called him a hack when KILL BILL borrows from this quite heavily.

BREAKING IN: Forsyth’s light touch working with Sayles’ script, which as always smuggles in barbed commentary on “acceptable” criminal activity in American life, makes for a really wonderful low-stakes caper movie with one of Burt Reynolds’ best performances. Looks beautiful too.

Next on The List is BREAKING IN, which I had never even heard of before getting it during the last KL sale but “written by John Sayles and directed by Bill Forsyth” does a lot to pique interest

One of the greatest genre deconstructions ever made. Bigelow using her semiotics background to unload on and indulge in the phallic sway cops have on American audiences, a more honest look at “dismantling the master’s house with the master’s tools” 30 years before PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN

BLACK SABBATH: Bava obviously having a ball formally throughout all 3 of these stories but the Boris Karloff vampire segment is a masterpiece and completely trounces the other two (especially the censored version of “The Telephone”).

I’m not the first person to mention JFK but that movie completely spun my head around when I first saw it in college, and his scene is beyond electrifying. As someone who loves Cold War skullduggery and espionage in novels and film it was tailor-made for me to obsess over.

Donald Sutherland was one of those actors’ actors; someone who didn’t get talked about as much as he should’ve been but when he passes everyone starts excavating the massive body of work he left behind. RIP to one of the last of a special breed.
