THE BEAR S3 is a messy rumination on failure and the bone-deep terror that following your calling with the people you love might not be enough when your brilliance is inseparable from your insecurities. The rising action of Season 2 crashing into a wall. I loved it.

BREAKING IN: Forsyth’s light touch working with Sayles’ script, which as always smuggles in barbed commentary on “acceptable” criminal activity in American life, makes for a really wonderful low-stakes caper movie with one of Burt Reynolds’ best performances. Looks beautiful too.

I’m not the first person to mention JFK but that movie completely spun my head around when I first saw it in college, and his scene is beyond electrifying. As someone who loves Cold War skullduggery and espionage in novels and film it was tailor-made for me to obsess over.
