I'm skeptical that this platform is going to stick. Elon has made Twitter less stable, but he has made it no less ESSENTIAL. In fact, the push to keep logging in to see *what the fuck did the dude do this time* is keeping it more in the conversation than ever.

He's made it significantly less essential for anyone who isn't using social media to promote, so it's only a matter of time before it becomes less essential for the promoters, too.

I just hope it sticks, so far it's the best alternative, the one that is more stable, of course there's less people than on Twitter, but maybe that's not actually so bad.

Do you think the pay-to-tweet model will kill it though? Academic psychology Twitter has largely moved over here already, but academic computer science Twitter is still hanging on.

I am skeptical as well, but this one has the best shot so far, because it *started out* with the big politicians, journalists, and shitposters on it. I think it'd take a lot to replace Twitter but I've dabbled in all the others and this one has the most juice.

It’s got to start somewhere. And this will be a good place to land once Musk actually does kill off twitter.

It’s essential as long as it’s a primary channel of communication for public figures and agencies, media, journalists. But how long can that endure? What made it essential was being public and democratized dialogue. And now it’s hidden behind a login, and the dialogue is as toxic as it gets.

I mean, going to stick vs replacing twitter: two different things. It's a boon for a lot of us to have a place that's conversational and *doesn't* rely on rage bait. I think that likely sticks. As to a twitter replacement, who knows? the outrage was never essential to the community & often hurt it.

This place isn’t going to work until someone invites nihilist Arby’s. That said, I deleted twitter yesterday because it has become less essential due to creeping fascism

this one is good because it's hitting critical mass points and because people are generally kinder. I think when the join rate opens up again it'll get more traction, but I get why they want to slow roll

I’m inclined to agree with you, but when it’s functionality is this limited and unpredictable, I’m not sure it matters whether it’s essential or not.

I personally think Bsky is hitting the sweet spot for alot of us who enjoy "social" media vs click bait and forced content engagement.

But if an app arrives that enough folks migrate to (and can handle the workload) Twitter could be replaced, no? Lots of ifs, but feels possible.

I'm skeptical that bluesky will stick I am more confident than ever that Twitter just got eliminated from Social Media's Civilization VI and will not stand the test of time.

Unless there are big changes at Twitter, it will continue its decline into obscurity. Bluesky will grow and thrive for a while but it's rare for a clone to have the impact of the original. I don't expect Bluesky will ever have the impact/influence Twritter did. Something new will come along.

Twitter is a perfect analogy of the US: It started as a great idea, ultimately created a democratic space where people from different backgrounds across the globe could engage & connect. Then a billionaire takes over & all of it unravels: infrastructure, community, real info/news.

Maybe not less essential but I use Twitter for my job and right now I cannot use it at all. So even having a backup site for people in my industry is also essential

essential for some, possibly, but the large community i'm a part of that used twitter as an essential tool in sharing our work, it's becoming a lot more difficult as it shifts to an incompetent buggy tool for the alt-right. they'll all move if something else functional enough comes along.

Waiting for the update now that the whole X thing dropped haha. Twitters branding is the only thing holding it's social significance together. Can't wait for months of reporting starting with "X, the social platform formally known as Twitter..."

Bluesky feels less shitty at the moment and more like a slot-in replacement for Twitter. I have a Mastodon account as well but I've interacted with people here about as much in a few days as over there in months. So far so good. It has sort of a Tumbler vibe, but in a good way.
