Addendum: How do you know an org is "good." Well, you gotta suss it out, BUT some things to ask: ♦ Are they focused on community building vs personality ♦ How do they treat disabled folks? ♦ How do they treat trans folks? ♦ Do they talk over non cis/white/male members. esp abt their own issues

Yeah, I honestly don't think there's any art that's so great it excuses abuse. There's stuff, like you said, it's great and you have to make peace with it, but nothing is so great as to give someone a pass.

Nothing is stopping every single Democratic elected official and apparatchik from taking the airwaves every single day to articulately and decisively repeat a set of cogent talking points about Trump (ie 45). Nothing. Dem PACs could be slamming him with ads now. Stop whining and do that.

Whenever I start wallowing in despair due to current events, I remind myself that I wrote two comics about how cool being trans is, book on queer superheroes, and a character study on the difficulties of moving past trauma, all of which were published by the Superman people. So, it's not all bad.

It's funny I can't remember his name, because I have a good visual memory of the meeting. I'm pretty sure he was wearing a red tshirt (lol) and we met at Borders, just the most 2004 shit. I remember thinking he was "old" but now I'm realizing that probably meant like 30, ahahahahaha, jeez, youth.

I forgot his name long ago. I hope he's doing well. And he certainly said it more eloquently than my 20 year old recollection. But, the idea that things don't always have to be about individual expression, but the effect you have on a community, that shifted something in me that's still in motion.

In 2004 I interviewed leaders from every party I could abt the election for my college paper. I was surprised the cpusa guy said he was voting for Kerry, then he said couldn't imagine putting his vanity above the lives of every vulnerable person he was trying to help. I still think abt it.

The elevation of "what some rando on social media thinks" is one of the worst developments in recent history. It's so SO easy to poison any and all narratives with it, but it really doesn't work at all in the positive direction. It's just fuel for chaos.

This is why I tend to gravitate to left spaces with strong understanding and practices of mutual aid, community building and social justice. There are way too many that are just very dude-ish death cults wrapped up in constructivist graphics :(
