Father, slow writer, connoisseur of the curious. The sort of person who always wishes he could have a better capsule description of himself.

I feel like the only way to beat Reacher is start playing Les Mis until he can’t take it anymore, sings along, and dies of embarrassment.

So, look: I started watching REACHER. It’s fun! But I think I have worked witch actors too much because there is never a part of my mind that doesn’t look at Alan Ritchson and think “This is a musical theatre guy.”

"There is apparently no need for hoods anymore.
That’s what’s changed." @kkdumez.bsky.social's newsletter has been an essential guide to what's going on with the Christian right's embrace of Christian nationalism.

I will die on the hill that broadcast TV is in many, if not most, ways superior to whatever we call what we have now.

I often ponder how for the first eight decades of the 20th century more or less, there were such strong characteristics for each decade, and then we got stuck in the Long 90s, which as far as I can tell are still happening.

It can get lost in all the hype, but Pelosi has excellent political instincts and this is extremely interesting.

The fundamental flaw of expanding a book recommendation algorithm to encompass everything, maybe? Who can say. Most of the Internet is three moles in a trench coat, doing a terrible human impersonation, after all.

Just got an email advertising a service from a service that only has my email because I’m using it. I feel like I should be able to blame AI for this somehow.

I’d love to have seen this. I saw Judd Hirsch in a production once (in Chapel Hill!) and it was revelatory to my understanding of what an actor can bring to a role.

It’s weird to me, but I can seen how a lot of Gen X would be driven by grievance.

This bit is fascinating. I wonder how Gen X and Millennials fall on these issues? I sure don’t care for patriotism or religion.

A lot of our political system is based on the implicit assumption that all parties involved are acting in good faith, and there is absolutely no mechanism for dealing with the fact that half our system at least is no longer doing so.

I find it hard to imagine that people who didn’t already support Trump would support him if he was widely mocked, but for some reason that seems to be the operating assumption for Democrats.

Love this movie so much. Side note, always great, as an adult, to see a film which your mom loved and showed you as a kid and realize it’s even better than you thought. Good call, mom.

Another lovely heat advisory day here in the South, and my glasses maintained their fog almost all the way from the parking deck to my office.

Odds are he keeps going for another 10 years, steadily degrading. But on the bright side, he’ll continue to take the Republican Party with him.

My Solomonic view is that NYT—perhaps the president’s primary persecutor recently—showed its whole ass with this swiss-cheese Parkinson’s specialist story. It’s blatantly copied from right-wing charlatans, unvetted. And a nimbler White House and campaign would be making it pay dearly for that.

In an ideal world I’d live in Maine in the summer and perhaps North Carolina in the winter. I fear I can never really leave the South as I take it with me in occasional unguarded word pronunciations.

Florida reset my idea of what hot was, and made me truly appreciate seasons by not having them. Moving to Maryland afterward was a bit like a storybook ending. For my kids, they finally got to experience seasons they had only seen on TV.

I would love to be more northern, in New England or Minnesota. I’ve been in some part of the South for much of my life, and while I’m eternally grateful to not be in Florida any more, I’m greedy for more cold.

Worth noting is that one reason the Republican Party no longer has a platform is because Republican policies are actually massively unpopular whenever they elucidate/admit to them.

Super salient point: most people do not like the far right. In France the last far right government was the Vichy Regime. Any wonder they were resistant?

The thing that's obvious to everyone and that nobody can actually write in the press is that the American (and yes, I'm sure elsewhere too) right wing is led by bad people and the object is to make more people extremely bad in basically every respect. It's anti-society

I’ve been on these Hanes socks for a long time. Usually I get at least a dozen pairs and rotate them. I’m aware this is weirdly specific but it saves me a lot of time and makes laundry a lot easier.
