Been exchanging a few emails with a telescope operator who's taking some observations I've requested. It's taken me longer than it should have to figure out why he always replies at night... 🔭🧪

Absolutely love how much the Vera Rubin Observatory’s camera just looks like the lens of a giant DSLR 🔭🧪 (Photo from rubinobservatory.org/explore/tech...)

Rubin will produce 20 TB of data *per night* (for comparison the largest iPhone is only 1 TB). The survey is going to produce so much data that we won’t be able to download it to work on it, so they’re building an entire platform for us to upload our code to instead. That’s a lot of data! 🔭🧪

Got to love the idea of journal club. Every so often I just get to talk to everyone in the department for an hour about any damn thing I want? Yesterday I told everyone about using trees as radio telescopes open.substack.com/pub/adammcma... 🧪🔭

An exoplanet candidate seems to not really exist and was probably just stellar activity – star spots and changes in convection currents arxiv.org/abs/2404.17494 🧪 #astronomy

Got to love it when an entire class of variable stars turns out to just… not exist?
'there is no sufficient evidence justifying the existence of a class of pulsating stars formerly known as the "Maia variables."'

In 1919, George Owen Squier published an article on his work experimenting with using trees as radio antennas. It worked surprisingly well and he dubbed his new invention the "floraphone".
I asked MS Copilot to imagine the floraphone, and it suggested adding a surprised squirrel to the image. #ai

In the 3rd century BCE, Aristarchus attempted to measure the distance to the Sun by observing the Moon. Limited by the technology of the day, he didn’t get the right answer, but his technique was very similar to how we measure the stars today
