[notes] "Ça plane pour moi" translates literally as 'it's gliding for me". It's a dated expression, like saying 'everything's groovy', and with a similar meaning. "gueule de bois" literally means 'wooden face' but also means hungover.

I finished it this morning, and it works really well at 320 pages. But bc I was reading a proof I didn't realise, until I checked online, that it's actually only instalment one of a huge sprawling saga "Bomb Light". My heart sinks a little to discover that.

Hard to see an English/American academic opening a scholarly edition that way. "I have always remained faithful to Alexander Pope" ... "I have always remained faithful to Virginia Woolf"...
