This is a misdiagnosis; argentina, brazil and france have top tier national teams without domestic leagues comparable to the prem. You want your domestic league to cultivate interest to draw athletic talents to the sport, but it’s best for them to compete against the highest level they can.

Canada also has a similar development path to the US (best players go to Europe, rest play in MLS) and the MLS has been a godsend for NT development. A second-tier league with good academies that feeds its best into first-tier leagues in Europe beats the hell out of what existed previous: nothing.

Any insight into the secret sauce that allows those nations to quickly congeal their national teams into champions (even when the locker rooms have had infamous meltdowns?) Are we missing a certain esprit de corps?

I also don’t think it’s true, even a little bit, that England relies on a few top players. They’re easily a top 3 team on pure talent. They just don’t have a good coach.
