Agreed - but that’s more urgency than consequences. Those consequences have been there the whole time, but they only became motivating when it was urgent. 😅

This is more about the difficulty with ADHD.
We often hear things like “if it was important to you, you would do it” but it’s much more difficult cuz even when something is important to us (or someone we care about, etc), it’s still extremely difficult to find motivation to actually DO the thing.

Definitely not my intention - “importance” as a motivator includes things like “important to someone I care about” or “important to my job/boss”

What’s the most helpful thing you’ve learned about ADHD?
For me, it’s about motivation.
Neurotypicals are (primarily) motivated by:
• importance
• rewards
• consequences
ADHDers are (primarily) motivated by:
• interest
• creativity/novelty
• challenge
• urgency

Living that paradox life (i.e. living w/ ADHD):
• Hyperfocused or intensely distracted
• Swinging wildly between extremely emotional and completely apathetic
• Love learning new complex skills, can't remember to pay my bills (even when I have the money!)

ADHD is like 50% not working, 50% working frantically to make up for the not working part, 50% thinking about the work I should be doing (but not actually working), and 50% not sleeping (but trying to).

I’m working on my plan for 2024 and I think I’ve got it figured out:
• Start 12+ ambitious new projects
• Don’t stop any of the existing ambitious projects I’m already doing
• Vacation(??)
• Find 60 extra hours per week somehow

I’ve officially moved extrafocus.com from Substack to Ghost.
Still some minor things to work out, but overall the process was pretty smooth!
Here’s hoping I did everything right when it comes to paid memberships.

I wonder how many people grew up hearing, “you don’t seem to have any problem focusing on video games!” when unable to do homework or chores, never knowing it was because they had ADHD.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but ADHD does NOT mean you are hyperactive.
While some ADHDers are hyperactive, there’s a whole other presentation of ADHD called Predominantly Inattentive, which is more common in women and doesn’t look hyperactive at all.
