I work hard these days to make my academic writing clear and accessible and every time I get one reviewer calling it ‘too conversational’ or ‘not professional’. I try to take the note while maintaining my goals but I really think we need a conversation about what good technical writing can look like

What an absurd review comment. I hope you push back on it. I regularly have to emphasize to students that yes, they are allowed to write such scandalous things as "I" in a paper ("I argue"...). It's the quality of the argument that matters!
