A paper I've coauthored just got published in Mycologia - two new Psilocybe species from South Africa. Psilocybe maluti is a secotoid species related to P. cubensis and P. ingeli is in section Zapotecorum, close to P. thaizapoteca.

Psilocybe moseri photographed a couple days ago in Pastaza, Ecuador. This species is closely related to P. zapotecorum and grows in muddy soils and landslides in cloud forests, usually near water. This species is found in warmer, lower elevation areas, 500 to 1200 meters above sea level.

Clitocybula azurea from Pastaza, Ecuador. This species was described from Brazil and Venezuela in 1973 by Singer - it occurs in Central and South America, and there is one iNaturalist observation from Chiapas, less than one mile into North America.

Penicilliopsis sp. growing on seed pods from Pastaza, Ecuador. Unlike the better known Penicilliopsis clavariiformis, this species doesn't form side branches. It may not be named yet - this specimen is in the herbarium in Quito and will be sequenced with Nanopore soon.

Looks like there is cypress duff on the stem bases, so this is the cypress blewit, Clitocybe violaceifolia. It lacks the frozen orange juice smell that the oak blewits have, which are Collybia nuda.

Thanks for being my first follower on Bluesky! Learning to identify mushrooms is like learning a foreign language, you'll get good at it if you feel like it. I like knowing what they are because then when I see one, it's like seeing an old friend.
